Dorian & Mixolydian

The two most useful modes

20 min

Dorian Mode

Dorian is a minor mode with one key difference from natural minor: it has a natural 6th instead of a flat 6th. This one note change makes Dorian sound minor but brighter and more hopeful than Aeolian.

Natural minor: 1 2 b3 4 5 b6 b7
Dorian: 1 2 b3 4 5 6 b7

The raised 6th is the Dorian "tell" — it's what gives it the jazzy, funky, sophisticated minor sound. Dorian is everywhere: funk, fusion, jazz, Santana solos, and any time you want a minor sound that isn't sad.

To use it: play Dorian over minor chords, especially m7 chords. A Dorian over Am7, D Dorian over Dm7.

Mixolydian Mode

Mixolydian is a major mode with a flat 7th instead of a natural 7th. This makes it sound like a major scale with a bluesy edge — it's the sound of dominant 7th chords.

Major: 1 2 3 4 5 6 7
Mixolydian: 1 2 3 4 5 6 b7

Mixolydian is THE blues-rock major sound. It's the Allman Brothers, Grateful Dead, classic rock jams. Whenever you're playing over a dominant 7th chord (G7, A7, D7), Mixolydian is the natural fit.

The flat 7th gives that bluesy "almost resolved but not quite" tension that makes you want to keep jamming.

Tab Examples

A Dorian scale

e|---------------------------5--7--|
B|--------------------5--7---------|
G|--------------4--6---------------|
D|--------5--7---------------------|
A|--5--7----------------------------|
E|----------------------------------|
A B C D E F# G A. That F# (natural 6th) is the Dorian flavour note.

A Mixolydian scale

e|---------------------------5--7--|
B|--------------------5--7---------|
G|--------------4--6---------------|
D|--------5--7---------------------|
A|--5--7----------------------------|
E|--5--7----------------------------|
A B C# D E F# G A. The G (flat 7th) gives the bluesy major sound.

Tips

  • Dorian = minor with a bright 6th. Use over minor and m7 chords.
  • Mixolydian = major with a bluesy b7. Use over dominant 7 chords.
  • These two modes plus major and minor pentatonic cover 90% of soloing situations
  • The "characteristic note" of each mode is what makes it unique — emphasise it

Practice Exercises

  1. Play A Dorian over an Am7 backing track — emphasise the F# (the natural 6th)
  2. Play A Mixolydian over an A7 backing track — lean into the G (the flat 7th)
  3. Compare A Dorian to A natural minor — hear how the raised 6th brightens the mood
  4. Compare A Mixolydian to A major — hear how the flat 7th adds blues edge
